After eight long years, veteran American black/thrash metal band Absu have finally managed to record and release a new album, simply titled “Absu”, which continues on with their usual mythological related lyrical themes.

As far as instrumentation goes, this album is performed incredibly well. It’s obvious the band members all know how to play their instruments, but my main problem with the music is it doesn’t sound as fast-paced, intense or varied as Absu’s earlier albums. None of them hold back on speed, intensity or atmosphere, which has come to be known as the true Absu sound, but on this album they seem to be holding back for whatever reason. That doesn’t mean this is a bad album, as all the songs are solid at the least, and there are a few gems throughout, but this strikes me as a very “safe” album, where the music is good but the band doesn’t have a clear focus or direction they want to take the music in.

Overall, this is an ok comeback album from Absu, but nothing overly spectacular. The best part of this album may just be the album cover, which is nothing short of amazing.
