ENTRENCH (Sweden) Inevitable Decay CD review by www.wormwoodchronicles.com

By Dr. Abner Mality

Entrench (not to be confused with the new death metal band Entrenched, who are also fantastic) is more like what I thought Hemoptysis would be like. This is raw, neck-breaking fury that is one of the most successful attempts to recreate the heyday of German thrash I've ever heard. It is an amazing tribute to the 85 to 87 era of that scene, right down to the 100% retro analog production that will bring tears to an old headbanger's eyes. Modern day digital kids might not get it, but fuck them if they can't feel the energy here! For sheer thrashing mayhem, I haven't heard one like this in a long time...not only does it bring back memories of Kreator's "Pleasure To Kill", Sodom's "Persecution Mania" and Destruction's "Infernal Overkill", but also many not-so-famous kraut-thrashers such as Vectom, Violent Force, Necronomicon and more. American retro-thrashers could learn a lot from these Swedes...even the super-crude cover art recalls the primitive glory of that earlier time!

TORTURE DIVISION (Sweden) With Endless Wrath... DIGI CD review by Phuling via www.metal-archives.com

By Phuling

With Endless Wrath We Bring Upon Thee Our Infernal TortureTorture Division Torture Division - With endless wrath we bring... - 80% I’m not sure if there’s really any reason for me to introduce this band, I imagine most death metal fans out there are somewhat familiar with them by now. Or at least should be, considering the fantastic job they’ve done spreading their music for free, and the fact that the members behind it have a solid history of delivering ace death metal (do Grave, Entombed, The Project Hate MCMXCIX, God Among Insects and Vomitory ring a bell?). With endless wrath we bring upon thee our infernal torture is the compilation of Torture Division’s first three demos, and thrown in as a bonus is a single containing a W.A.S.P. cover.

Right from the get go Ejaculation of the wicked pummels through you. Even if you’ve never heard the material before it’d be instantly evident we’re dealing with a talented bunch, capable of writing and performing heavy-as-hell material. While being far from original, they take the best of both the European (with Sweden in particular) and North American sounds. While remaining incredibly heavy and utterly powerful, their tunes also hide a keen sense of melody. Churning riffing and wicked guitar lines push things forward as the blasting drumming keeps the brutality at a high level. It feels like taking the general old school sound of Sweden, mixing it with the Polish flavour of Vader and the Floridian touch of Morbid Angel and Deicide. The lads slickly wander the fields of both old school and more modern brutality, which at times actually remind me a bit of Vomitory.

The tempo’s fast, the riffing qualitative and the burly growls easily let you scream along (something it’s almost impossible not to during a track like We are torture division). The production’s great, much thanks to Dan Swanö’s handiwork. But, I do sense a degeneration in sound quality for the last five tracks (from the third demo and the single), where it’s slightly weaker. While With endless wrath we bring upon thee our infernal torture is nothing but high quality, top notch shit, I have to say their new demo compilation Evighetens dårar (also out on Abyss Records) is even better. Get ‘em both now; there’s no reason not to!

ENTRENCH (Sweden) Inevitable Decay CD review by www.slugmag.com

By Bryer Wharton

Entrench = Sodom + Death Angel (early) + Nuclear Assault + Destruction (early)
Don your denim patch-plastered jacket, bust out your bullet belt and revel in what may be the least talked-about but best damn thrash record your ears will be bombarded with on Entrench’s debut album, Inevitable Decay. After six years of demos, this Swedish trio of mad thrashers are here to beat your ass the way thrash metal should. The problem with many of the modern thrash acts pushing out retro material these days, aside from regurgitated riffs and lack of the real thrash angst, is their modern production. Entrench not only nail the classic production of albums from the ’83 to ’85 era, they ooze old-school attitude like a pus-ridden sore on a hardworking thrash guitar player’s finger. Stylistically, the band does a good job of crossing over the core of their sound, which is early European thrash with some doses of American rawness. It isn’t just riffs you’re going to remember from Inevitable Decay; the tracks stand hard and fast with new classics. “Debt of Sorrow” is filled with mosh-pit fervor and a core swirling, dizzyingly fast thrash riff with a throat-scraper of a vocal delivery, and “Crossing the River,” starts with speedy punches and rounds into some brutal thrash-groove breakdowns. All this is plenty to get the old school and new school to wet their skintight black jeans.

BANE (Serbia) - Chaos, Darkness & Emptiness DIGI CD review by Rockerilla magazine

By Mystery Flame

Serbia will add your name to the list of nations of the 'east, such as Poland, Ukraine and Flomania, which produce extreme metal club quality of higher education, these groups often know how to customize their own style Please use melodies or instruments of their traditional lands. In the case of Bane's what you do not check their excellent sound directly back to Sweden of Dark Funeral, Dissection and Old Man's Child, Blackened Death drenched in melody and great intensity, Quincke will not be a novelty, but because this type of style, appealing not often hear, especially so well produced and performed, I would recommend cold.

Rating: 8/10

Review was originally written in Italian and has been translated using Google Translate, Original review in Italian can be seen below...

MAAX (U.S.) Unholy Rock & Roll DIGI CD review by http://christopherlatta.suite101.com

By Christopher Latta

Maax's second studio album is a fun slice of old school black/thrash metal.

When the subject of black metal is discussed, there are specific stereotypes and tropes that are sure to come up just about every time. Even when looking past the various crimes that were committed by the genre’s more infamous adherents, one is likely to call forth images of corpse-painted faces and hypnotic song structures aided by lo-fi production.

Maax seems to be one exception to that rule as they have disregarded the modern standards and opt for a more primal approach. While this is their second studio album, it happens to be their third release overall as they previously put out the Dawnbringer full-length in 2009 and the Six Pack Witchcraft EP in 2010.

Storming the Gates of Metal Black

Several listeners have tried to place Maax somewhere on the line between blackened thrash and death ‘n’ roll (The more you think about it, the more you realize how ridiculous the names of metal subgenres are these days), but their overall sound doesn’t seem to be too far off from what Venom was pioneering in the early 80s. This influence is best demonstrated on “Do What Thou Wilt,” an upbeat anthem that feels like a modern version of the classic “Welcome To Hell.”

But while Cronos and his merry bunch may be the leading influence on this group, it’s not the only one to be found on here. One can find clear references to punk, thrash, black metal, and even some classic Motorhead here and there. Fortunately all of these elements work well with one another, reminding one of how most of them had their roots in a singular dirty force.

Speaking of dirty, this album is also made distinct by its production. In a way similar to “Six Pack Witchcraft,” the production is incredibly raw and helps give the album a very live feel that works in its favor. The band itself doesn’t sound as distant as it did on the EP, but there is still a great deal of chaos and intensity to work with.

Speaking of the band, they generally put on some good performances though there’s nothing particularly mind-blowing on display. The production aids the guitar playing and drums, making them both sound quite filthy throughout. In addition, the vocals are delivered in a raspy, mid-range bark that makes one wonder if they should be cleaner or harsher. Either way, they carry the songs well and show off a lot of energy.

God Dethroned, The Devil Waits Below

In terms of how the songs themselves play out, Unholy Rock & Roll is somewhere between the two releases that came out before it. While the songwriting is generally more elaborate than Six Pack Witchcraft and has lengths similar to Dawnbringer, the songs are mostly executed in a very direct, upbeat fashion.

In addition to the Venom worship on “Do What Thou Wilt,” “Rot ‘N’ Roll” and the title track are by far the strongest tracks that this release has to offer. Not only are the riffs catchy, but they also throw in some solid gang vocals during the choruses that do a lot to benefit the barroom atmosphere.

The opening tracks known as “Coldest Steel” and “Fight With Fire” are also worth noting for they show off a nice touch of early 80s thrash influence. While this does lead to the tracks having introductions that are respectively similar to Metallica’s “Hit the Lights” and Slayer’s “Angel Of Death,” they quickly become their own tracks with the latter featuring a particularly pounding hook.

Of course, there are a few outliers that move away from the album’s largely rock-oriented nature. The interestingly titled “Purge of Depravity 2: The Pentagram” is a two minute interlude meant to serve as a melodic break from the violence while “Overthrone” seems to take cues from the band’s purer black metal roots. They might not be the most immediate tracks on here but they are still pretty solid in their more dramatic nature.

We Pray To Nothing Yet Receive All

As any musician will tell you, it is a nearly impossible task to capture the energy of a band’s live sound onto an actual studio release. However, Maax does manage to come pretty damn close to achieving this feat though they may still have a bit more work in terms of their songwriting skill.

But for what it’s worth, this may be their most enjoyable album to date and one of the most fun releases that 2011 has to offer. This isn’t a deep album by any stretch of the imagination, but rather one that’s meant to be blared in hopes of pissing off your neighbors. And judging by the lack of complaints that I’ve gotten from mine, I either have really awesome neighbors or just need to make it louder…

Current Highlights:

“Fight With Fire”

“Unholy Rock & Roll”

“Do What Thou Wilt”

“Rot ‘N’ Roll”

"Black Thrash 'em All"

BODYFARM "Slaves of War" Video / New Album Update

Dutch Death Metal Bruisers BODYFARM have released a new video for the track "Slaves of War," taken from the band's self-titled EP. Originally released by the band in 2010, Abyss Records got in on the action earlier this year and is available through the Abyss Records Webstore. Regarded by fans and critics alike as one of the most impressive debuts in recent times, the EP is demonstrative of the band's no-frills approach to traditional death metal. You can view BODYFARM delivering body blows, uppercuts, and kidney punches at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rfUXD0mMmgk

BODYFARM is currently working on Malevolence, the upcoming full-length album slated for release next year through Abyss Records. The drums have been recorded and the work continues with a vengeance. The album will feature 11 new tracks of unmitigated violence, including a cover song from a legendary old school death metal band. You can watch footage of the recording process on the band's You Tube channel: www.youtube.com/BodyfarmNL
Upcoming BODYFARM Live Appearances:
November 25th - Hamburg (DE) @ Bambi Galore
December 23rd - Zeist (NL) w/ Hail of Bullets
"If you're looking for solid, uncompromising death metal, then Bodyfarm is where you should start." - Apoch's Metal Review
"This is death metal, done in an organic and classic way." - Metal Team UK
"The way they choose not to conform to any trend and belt out uncompromising traditional death metal should satisfy and attract a ton of good old fashioned death metal fans." - Angry Metal Guy

MAAX (U.S.) Unholy Rock & Roll DIGI CD review by http://scumfeastmetal666.blogspot.com

By SCUMFEAST METAL 666

As we all know Rock n Roll has always been viewed as unholy and the Devil's music. Metal just pushed it further with the reply "Yeah, so what's your point?" MAXX (pronounced "May-axe") are a band that keeps Rock n Roll, actually Extreme Metal, on the devil's side. I learned that over a year ago when I heard their Dawnbringer release also on Abyss Records. While that was a old school romp through Metal's almighty hellfire this latest one surpasses it in every conceivable way. This second full length of theirs is another journey through the extreme days of buzzsaw quality guitars with air guitar worthy soloing, a pounding rhythm section and vocals which are a mixture screams and growls. Essentially there's plenty head-banging and raised arm in the air for the horned fist salute potential throughout. Every song on here begs for your worship but a few highlights need pointing out. "Coldest Steel" opens this thing as if it were a live release. No obligatory spooky instro openers here, just knock the door off the fuckin hinges blasting forth and in your fuckin face. It's the equivalent of getting a wake up call with a spiked mace across the forehead. "Fight With Fire" opens with a Tom Araya like scream and continues with the SLAYER-esque thrash attack. The title cut is the archetype driving song which ya listen to when you go out to party on a Friday night. Their self titled cut "MAXX" cuts into the VENOM vain and "Black Thrash 'Em All" pretty much is self explanatory. A few cuts on the latter half of the release lean more towards the full on blackness like "Overthrone". All in all an outstanding release from start to finish.

Rating: 5/5

THOUSAND YEAR WAR (U.S.) Tyrants and Men DIGI CD review by http://battlehelm.com

By Anders Ekdahl

With a name like Thousand Year War you are forgiven for thinking that this will be the worst kind of Christ-bashing ever seen on CD. This is not any criticism but the moment I put this on I thought I had accidentally accessed the new Amon Amarth album. This has that same groove and feel as all Amon Amarth’s records. And seeing that I am a huge Amon Amarth fan this could only get one review; two thumps up. If you like your death metal groove-oriented in a never-before-seen way and have played your Amon Amarth records to a grind then lend this an ear or two. Let you mind be free and you’ll enjoy this as much as I do. That you constantly think of Amon Amarth (fifth mention so far) is not a drawback. Instead it is an added bonus. I could live on Amon Amarth (sixth) a whole week and not tire. This is right up there.

THOUSAND YEAR WAR (U.S.) Tyrants and Men DIGI CD review by www.eternal-terror.com

By Matt Coe

Alaska may be one of the last places in the world you would think a melodic death metal band would reside, but for guitarist/vocalist Hiram Lohr, this is where he calls home. Recruiting session musicians to fill out his musical visions with bassist Kellen and drummer Fredrik Widigs, “Tyrants And Men” as a debut 10 song full length has a lot more in common with the European movement than anything remotely North American.

Hiram’s vocals are a blend of the deep bellows from below along with blackened sandpaper-ish screams - which will surely bring to mind artists like Amon Amarth, Hypocrisy, and Dissection on songs like “No Gods, No Masters” and the slower militant marching “Warriors Of Defiance”. The riffing and soloing carries the bulk of the melody enhancement for the group, often with those striking speed note picking notations that can be a tad folk-like during the slower sections. The bulk of “One Final Breath” gives Fredrik the ability to move from super blasting double bass to more controllable drum motions that will certainly induce head banging and air drumming maneuvers. There’s even a hint of thrash mastery in “Open Casket” as the main stair step guitar parts recall “Over The Wall” from Testament if played at double speed.

Lyrically tackling a good versus evil perspective, and often evoking historical/ mythological topics to flesh out the thoughts such as in one of the stronger tracks “Spartacus”, Thousand Year War can develop this niche to keep themselves away from the conventional gore/death material that’s been prevalent in this scene. Overall “Tyrants And Men” gets the job done if you are a melodic death metal fan- as long as you understand there isn’t a clean vocal passage in clear ear shot.

PASADENA NAPALM DIVISION (U.S.) P.N.D. EP CD review by www.eternal-terror.com

By Peter Loftus

For someone who has been recording since 1983, Kurt Brecht has relatively few releases to his name. He hasn’t recorded a DRI album since 1995 and other than an appearance on Dave Grohl’s Probot in 2004, we haven’t heard a thing from him. Last year he got back into the studio with half of Texan thrashers Dead Horse and Bubba from Verbal Abuse, and this six track EP is the result.

The music is crossover/thrash, pretty much in the vein of later DRI releases with lyrics covering such topics as drinking with zombies, eating okra and being a failure. The sound is chunky and focused, perfectly catching the energy and power of the band. The bass thunders and rolls, the drums are crisp and the guitars a warm and fuzzy roar.

For those who missed out on this era and have been satisfying themselves with Municipal Waste and Evile, PND is definitely an act that you should check out. For those who were listening to DRI back in the day, this release will remind you of those happy days before everyone became fat and started growing beards. Even if you got pissed off with DRI for slowing down in later years, PND should still hit the spot. Let’s hope we don’t have to wait 15 years for a full-length...
