BANE (Serbia) - Chaos, Darkness & Emptiness DIGI CD review by www.metal-archives.com

By MetalGeorge

After an impressive, evocative classical intro piece, Serbia’s Bane erupt into a halcyon whirlwind of semi-symphonic blackness with their Chaos, Darkness & Emptiness debut.
Bane-similar to the Indian group Demonic Resurrection-do great work in taking us back to the late 90s school of melodic death/black metal thought. Though the riffs fly fast ‘n furious here, they never lose their melodic lustre, and always seem primed, poised and aimed at sending the songwriting message straight to the heart of modern day metal falseness.
Practically everything surrounding Chaos, Darkness & Emptiness screams professionalism, from the massively ace production quality to the level of aggression found within the band’s compositions. Bane clearly have an ever-present focus in mind, and seem determined to bring Serbian metal up front and fucking center to the underground consciousness.
You know what I say? Good for them! As Sam Dunn’s Global Metal documentary showed us, Scandinavia and Germany aren’t the only proud metal countries out there, and Bane are proof that solid steel exists in countries all around the world.
What’s better is that Bane are also difficult to really pin down aesthetically. Though this album’s overall feel could be recommended for Behemoth fans, there really is a level of uniqueness which is intriguing on the surface; I truly hope Bane expands on this even further on future LPs.
Until then, Chaos, Darkness & Emptiness is a blower first full strike, and hopefully just the beginning signs of awesome things to come from this sick Serbian quartet.

NOCTIS IMPERIUM (Venezuela) Nihil CD EP review by http://occultblackmetalzine.blogspot.com

By OccultBlackMetal

Noctis Imperium are a band from Caracas, Venezuela that plays black metal with a strong death metal edge and this is a review of their 2010album "Nihil" which was released by Abyss Records.

Drums range from being midpaced to fast with alot of brutal blast beats while the bass playing has a very powerful sound of it own with alot of fast and dark riffs, as for the keyboards they are rarely used but when utilized they are only there to enhance atmosphere..

Rhythm guitars combine the heaviest and fastest elements of black and death metal together while staying on the more dark side, while the lead guitars are very melodic and contain alot of early 90's satanic death metal influences.

Vocals are mostly high pitched black metal screams with some deep death metal growls, while the lyrics cover some Thelemic occultism, darkness, war, and imperailism, as for the production it has a very professional sound and you can hear all of the instruments that are present on this album.

In my opinion Noctis Imperium are good for what they do with the way they mix modern black metal with some death metal influences, and I can see this band getting mixed reviews in the underground since they are too primal for the mainstream black metal audience but probably would not be considered true by some of the more underground black metal audience, but other than that this is still a good metal album that would appeal to fans of Dark Funeral, Belphegor and other bands similar.
RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Bring Me Sacrifice" and "Unus In Nihil". RECOMMENDED.

FESTER (Norway) Silence Remastered DIGI CD review by ochsenschaedel via www.metal-archives.com

By ochsenschaedel

unique, yet strange and calm northern bleakness

One of those unrecovered treasures of sinister norwegian metal must be FESTER’s second album. Not only as this is the first review but because they weren’t the most popular bands of their country when it comes to the style of their musick back in 1994. Black Metal was the big thing and Fester kicked off with “Winter of sin” as a supposedly band of this genre. Their first assault was quite OK, but with this attempt they managed to form a certain style of metal that put them a bit besides the common areas of black metal, in Norway and the rest of this rotten world.

“Silence”. There could not have been a better choice for the titel of that CD. Usually metal is supposed to be in your face, is meant to be somehow “loud”, direct, a streight look into your eyes. But this album is pure understatement, is shy, is the feeling of loneliness amongst thousand people. FESTER understood how to build their own niche of tasteful and relaxed, gloomy and mystic bleak metal. Yes, “Silence” is bleak, yet somehow filled with warmth.

Some words to the sound: low tuned, accentuated guitar tones meet strong pounding, strangely produced drum patterns. Quite traditional heavy metal riffing mostly mid tempo like performed. Every riff is placed with care, every melancholic melody line goes directly into your brain and won’t leave you. The unhurried tempo isn’t changed that often and thus you might think it’s a pure doom metal album, but it is not. There are not really any traditional doom metal riffs in there. Its rather heavy metal riffing inspired by calm black metal aesthetic feelings. You see, it’s not easy to described what those four young norwegians created here. It is definitely a sound that has NEVER been there before and has never been copied by any other bands.

And its not only the guiter- and drumsound, the melodies and structures that create this eerie feeling. The vocals are among the most strangest ever on a metal record. There is no screaming or growling, there is only this whispering voice, somehow mysterious and distant. Maybe later beeing re-covered (copied?) by danish dark folk band OF THE WAND AND THE MOON. Lyrics deal with loneliness, night, ravens, misery, death. Nothing special, but well done.

Eight tracks (plus one semi accustic/keyboard track) with a flawless line of great compositions and perhaps one “hit” that has to be “voices from the woods” with its majestic, keyboard-filled chorus. But my personal favourite for the last 14 years was always “growing thirst” with that great uptempo riffing and haunting melodies.

This album is trying to catch the mood of silence and loneliness as perfect as a metal album could ever do so. Its is a piece of art that you will recognize easily amongst 100.000 faceless albums.

TORTURE DIVISION (Sweden) Evighetens Dårar DIGI CD review by www.brutalism.com

By Alex

Swedens Torture Division contains 3 familiar names of the Death Metal scene: Jörgen Sandström, well known for his participation in Grave, Entombed and The Project Hate MCMXCIX, Lord K. Philipson of (among others) Dark Funeral fame and last but not least Vomitory drummer Tobias Gustafsson. The band seems to concentrate on releasing demos, because since their formation in 2007, Torture Division shat out not less than 6 of them. The back catalogue is completed by a single and a compilation which contains 3 of the aforementioned demos. “Evighetens Dårar” is the second compilation, which comprehends the other, newer 3 of them. Mixed and mastered by Dan Swanö at Unisound Studios, this release clocks in with about 28 minutes of music. What you´re about to hear is professionally produced Death Metal with a nice Grindcore and D-Beat touch. The tracks on “Evighetens Dårar” will easily grab your attention right from the start. Keeping the songs between 2 and 3 minutes, the Torture Division dudes renounce any over the top fretboard gymnastics or excessive embellishments. This is brutal and pretty basic, but will surely attract attention of those who are into the underground Death Metal scene. It would be wrong to reduce the band to the good old Swedish style, because there are also some Morbid Angel-like riffs and grooves here and there (e.g. the beginning of “Eld Och Plågor“). The epic track “The Axe Murderer” (9 seconds) is a nice counterpart and shows Torture Divisions Grindcore side. Of course this album contains also lots of riffs that could have been on the last Vomitory outputs. As you can easily imagine, this release is anything but boring, combining the aforementioned styles and influences to a real brutal cocktail.
“Evighetens Dårar” is worth to be checked out by everyone who´s looking for an interesting and unused sounding album. This is brute entertainment and also like a breath of fresh air for the sometimes stagnating Death Metal scene.

SINCERA (Norway) Cursed and Proud DIGI CD review by http://aristocraziawebzine.blogspot.com

By Mourning

Sincere is the moniker chosen for the project, which involves among other Tiger Fester of Algol and the former Thomas Andresen, have signed a deal with the Abyss Records and released debut album "Cursed And Proud" in September 2011.
The product is in line with the style I brought forward by the artists involved, a death very focused on the heels of the old school with mid-tempo that are interspersed with blasts, phrasing the limit with a propensity to thrash and black punctuated by icy melodies far time to remember that hidden in some ways the Greeks Rotting Christ and Dissection in part of this mixture in the past that were the real masters.
The platter is one that leaves little doubt it's real, made with good care, but obviously genuine and deliberately in the sound, the bass cut out a clear dimension pleasant to the ear, the compositions flow with no frills except for some inclusion of synth that enhances the appearance of atmospheric pollution, as if the early nineties for these musicians had never passed, we present them by living intensely and with pleasing results.
The material recovered, in part (tracks 1-4) from the demo "Tall And Proud" which was given new life, in part by the "Live In The Essence" (tracks 5-8) to which was added the same name Song of Norway's entry wrestler Byron Lawless, desires and passion is anchored to the period when the Scandinavian scene churning out works imbued with dark-hued metal.
Andresen's voice with his scratching lends itself to providing a further basis for the loading blackeggiante mostly death oriented and songs like "Tall And Proud", "Blinded" (short but guessed the stage singing clean), "Die Like Jesus Christ "and the fun bonus track" Byron Lawless "stand out in a platter level, yes, but no missteps.
After returning to activities of historians Fester see them side by side by Sincere implies that the circle of young men who turned around now that reality has not lost his desire to play and give their music, as a first step "Cursed And Proud" is convincing and recommended for those who (like me) is a nostalgic not get enough of listening to a certain type of sound, however, give the rest a chance to work on hold to give us official confirmation that it is not just a side project but a band in effect handing over a successor who Bissi positive feelings thus far received.

BANE (Serbia) Chaos, Darkness & Emptiness DIGI CD review by Orion via www.metal-archives.com

By Orion

The Next Big Thing

While I was searching for my dose of Dissection-esque metal, I came across Bane as a recommendation, so I decided to check this album out.

It starts with a fairly uninspired orchestral introduction, paving the way for a relentless assault of melodic black/death metal in the vein of Dissection, imbued with a Belphegor touch with some Emperor spices.

The True Insomnia and Pandemonium are two amazing tracks, full of freezing melodies, layers upon layers of melodic guitars, and acoustics straight from Jon Nodtveidt's textbook. These two tracks are followed by an interlude, which precedes Abhorrence, a song noticeably more ferocious than the aforementioned two.

After that, the album massively slows down in pace. Plague Upon Yourself is one fuck of a black/doom metal song while The Haunting presence's outro features some excellent soloing over slow, crushing riffs.

All in all, the album offers a slab of melodic black/death metal with a lot of variation and huge balls. My only minor complaint is that the first and last tracks are completely useless.

The Gardnerz (Sweden) The System of Nature DIGI CD review by http://autothrall.blogspot.com

By autothrall

Swedish initiates The Gardnerz took me quite by surprise, not due to their unusual moniker, but by their rather unique approach to the hybrid of doom and death metal which is a bit trickier to classify than the garden variety drudges who generally inhabit the genre. You can clearly hear the roots of My Dying Bride, Anathema, Paradise Lost or Officium Triste in this sound, but the stark melodic walls they superimpose seem more akin to fellow swedes like Memory Garden or Candlemass, if they implemented layers of growling and snarling more like a grind or death metal outfit. They are also fond of interjecting calm contrasts into a lot of their songs, with flows of thick bass and cleaner, slightly affected guitar tones.

It doesn't always work that well, but the overall aesthetic is one of a some bone carved galleon on a sea of crushing and tranquil emotions that seem to shift on a normalized basis. Prime examples include opener "The Art of Suffering", which transforms from an elfin eloquence to these massive dual melodies that twine beneath the guttural foreman; or "Flaw in the Axiom", which has these epic, gliding guitar lines but builds into complexity to create a more exotic, hammering rhythm after the bridge. They definitely experiment with the riffing, striating cuts like "Incident" or "Born to Consume" with these eerie, scale based departures that one might expect of a more technical death metal act, and most importantly, they understand that doom metal must not be slow, boring and wholly soul-leeching to successfully shower its emotional void upon the listener, even if a few too many of the tunes use comparable techniques and suffer from sameness.

This is far from funeral doom, mind you, but a dynamic formula which never underplays the significance of the guitar riff. The production is giant, boxy and bright, even when converting a few of their obscure influences into covers. Vulcano's "Bloody Vengeance" and Winter's "Servants of the Warsmen" are both tackled here, and they both do a loyal and chunky service to the originals, even if some of the somber mood of the latter is lost with the brighter production. At any rate, I didn't love all the material on the album, and the vocals, while abrasive, are your pretty standard variety growls like a harsher Nick Holmes (his death voice), but the Swedes are onto something here. If they can extract some of their mightier melodic conjurations into some better grooves, and perhaps clean up some of the transitions between loud and soft, then they could easily lurch alongside their countrymen Isole as modern death/doom titans.

THOUSAND YEAR WAR (U.S.) Tyrants and Men DIGI CD review by http://ringmasterreviewintroduces.wordpress.com

By RingMaster

The new album from Alaskans Thousand Year War creates a very satisfying blend of old school melodic death and black metal with other classic metal flavours resulting in an interesting and at times enthralling array of powerful and direct sounds. Tyrants And Men may not be exactly rippling in originality but it delivers metal that stirs up the senses with creative essences alongside its pummelling assaults.
From Anchorage and begun in 2008, Thousand Year War for this album is guitarist and vocalist Hiram Lohr with session musicians Kellen on bass and drummer Fredrik Widigs. Released via Abyss Records, Tyrants And Men took time to find its way into the world’s ears. While working as a commercial fisherman to finance it the album was recorded by Lohr at Garden Studios in Anchorage with Kellen, it was then upon the failure to find a skilled drummer at home sent across to Fredrik Widigs (The Ugly And Desultor) in Sweden summer of 2009 to lay down a drum track. Once passed on then to be mixed and mastered by Fredrik Lunneborg of Primecut Studios in Sweden, the album was presented before Dan Ferguson of Abyss Records leading to the band being signed and its release in September of this year. It may have taken time but has proven well worth the wait.
The album, as a great many others have also said has a distinct Amon Amarth flavour to it and if a fan of their striking and powerful sounds Tyrants And Men will be a definite winner. Rampant riffs, striking flowing guitars and incisive solos, plus a vocal mix of guttural growls and higher pitched screams fly from the tracks with ease and strong ability. Though the album does not venture often too far from expected melodic death metal sounds and craft it is definitely one of the more accomplished releases lately in sound and production.
Lyrically the album deals with the duality and opposition between the ruling evil elite running the world and the people, who are constantly battling to turn the world we live in around with truth, not power and wealth. The theme is as powerful as the sounds and adds a good deeper dimension to the release.
There is a good strong level across the album, each track holding its own and giving great satisfaction but some moments really show the band as a future force as well as a more than decent band right now. ‘The Sea’ is a lively blend of great melodic guitars and grooves rippling beneath the intense vocals and drums, and its successor ‘No Gods, No Masters’ an irrepressible blast of dark rock ‘n’ roll that eagerly pounds away with enthused energy. It may not be the more original track on the album but it is undeniably one of the more exiting. The one song that lifts its head highest is ‘Open Casket’, breaking out on a classic rock riff not out of place in a Maiden song the track brings in some smart and intricate guitar play that lights up the dark mood fuelling the song. Every song on the album has its moment though and it is impossible to find a weak track anywhere.
The downside to the album? There is not much apart from the previously mentioned lack of anything really new or unpredictable. There is also an overall sameness across some of the tracks but with honesty could not that be levelled at the majority of releases these days to some degree? Thousand Year War has produced an album that more than can hold its own against any other and makes the thirty five minutes plus a very worthwhile and agreeable use of time and that can easily be repeated again and again.
