MAAX (U.S.) Unholy Rock and Roll DIGI CD review by http://heavymetal.about.com

By Dave Schalek

Toss Motörhead, Venom, and even early (very early) Motley Crüe into a blender along with an unabashed fondness for rollicking, sloppy blackened thrash and you have Unholy Rock N’ Roll, the second full-length album from Indianapolis’ Mäax. Obviously, a release such as this is going to appeal to the old timers such as myself, but the band’s approach is also just one of infectious fun and an enthusiasm for all things metal.
The riffs are dirty and are obviously descended from pure, old school rock n’ roll, the tempo is generally a gallop, and the vocals are snarled and nasty. Add a slightly muddy production and Unholy Rock N’ Roll becomes an obvious niche release for a particular demographic. That’s just fine as Unholy Rock N’ Roll is a lot of fun, if somewhat forgettable due to average songwriting and musicianship.
But, forging new territory in songwriting and technical expertise is not the point, and Unholy Rock N’ Roll succeeds in its mission to find that demographic niche.

THOUSAND YEAR WAR Mastermind Goes Track by Track on
Tyrants and Men

By Rustyn Rose

Hirum Lohr takes us through Tyrants and Men

Thousand Year War is the brainchild of guitarist and vocalist Hirum Lohr, who hails from Haines, Alaska. The war began in 2008 with the sonic cacophony which would become the band’s debut EP, released as Shadow of the Colossus. The positive response from the EP led Hirum and company to work towards a full length album. Months after the first ep the band went in to record with Ryan Brownell and in a period of 7 days had laid down the vocals, guitars, and bass. They tapped session drummer Fredrik Widigs (Angrepp, Desultor, The Ugly) who recorded the drum tracks at Prime Cut Studios in Sweden, in the summer of ’09. Fredrik Lunneborg at Primecut Studios mixed the final product and Dan Ferguson oatAbyss Records snapped it up. This summer Thousand Year War released its debut album, Tyrants and Men. That initial EP can be downloaded for free on the band’s Website: http://thousandyearwar.com/

This week Hirum Lohr took time to fill Metalholic in on the band’s debut Tyrants and Men, track by track.

1. Defiance
This song lays out an epic battle scene, but not in a pagan sense….its all about finding power in yourself and banding together with other like minded individuals in defiance to the new world order/political system/governments.
The beginning is a hard hitting thrashing riff that goes in a melodic chorus and a brutal breakdown….

2. The Sea
Written out of my passion for well…the sea of course! I lived by the ocean in Alaska and fished commercially. There was so much power in the Seas that I felt I had to translate it into music. The result was a song was a good representation of the seas, full of different emotions and feelings. The beginning is rocking just like how the ocean gets wild and out of hand…then the chorus is very smooth and biting….almost raw if you will and goes into an interesting and creative lead break which leads right back into the rocking first riffs of the song and ends telling the story of someone tragically but happily giving their life to the power of the sea!

3. No Gods, No Masters
Especially proud of this track. It is a rocking anti-government anthem that should get everyone banging their head and throwing their fists in the air! I wanted to create something happy and melodic that was also just dripping with menace….menace towards powers that want nothing but to control us as human beings. The chorus in the song is also very open and original with passionate vocals and very emotional lyrics. “No Gods, No Masters” is a call out for people to make a choice to not be enslaved by other people…a choice made with your mind.

4. Thousand Year War
TYW is a very powerful song! The opening is fast tremelo picking riffs with thunderous drums and unrelenting double bass. It goes into a hard hitting punchy break down and back into the fast opening riff. Middle of the song is a crushing chorus with evil low and hi vocals combined that will make everyone sing along to it. Lyrically TYW is about the crusaders and how their lineage and the same sort of people exist today that are using religion to extort control over others, like George Bush and his fellow skull and bones/illuminati bastards.

5. Open Casket
My personal favorite on the album. Unrelenting and thrashy fast song. After a the thrashy element of the opening riff there is an epic tremlo picking chorus with high and biting vocals that rip you apart and leads into one of the most unusual and hard hitting riffs on this entire album!
I originally had written “Open Casket” on the wall in my cabin one day…I had pretty much a vision of how people are basically living dead lives. The walking dead…no souls, no inspiration. Seems people are living dead alive…out of their open casket.

6. The Storm I Ride ( I cover )
“Storm I Ride” is a cover of Abbath’s band ‘I‘. Very rocking, almost black ‘n roll song. We did a very good cover of this one!!!!!!

7. Warriors of Deceit
WOD is a prodding war anthem….all about a league of undead warriors force to constantly relive a battle they have fought over and over again. Almost like a valhalla story but touching on the more nightmarish aspects of having to do battle day after day. This song has alot of elements which includes a sort of folkish riff in the middle which adds to the originality. Just one of those songs you need to experience for themselves.

8. One Final Breath
This song almost has a sort of power metal feel to it in the opening….very fast palm muted riffage and double bass and drums that follow efficiently along. The subsequent riff has alot of triplets and fast drum work and angry vocals. Lyrically OFB touches on how in war there really is no glory. The message we here from so many bands is the glory of war….? How many guys do you know that write lyrics like this have actually fought in war. War is hell, and its useless….this is the tracks message.

9. Spartacus
I am absolutely inspired by the legend of Spartacus! He seemed to me like a rebel to the state and power of the roman empire. A warrior that served his men rather than some sadistic state and social order. The riffs are of course low and brutal to emphasize the brutality and ferociousness of the battles spartacus led to free his men. The choruses are anthems that I was trying to make as the voice of Spartacus speaking to his men.

10. Tyrants and Men
Tyrants and Men is an extremely fast black metal track with unrelenting fast picking riffs and blasting drums……chorus is punchy and powerful. A very nice transition from the opening riff which subsequently leads back to the blasting opener. In the middle of the song the breakdown is just simply tasty and crushing. Hits you in the face like a 10 ton shit hammer! The angry vocals and lyrical content will inspire the listener to raise their fist and scream with me! Ill end with a lyrical excerpt from this song…remember, the tyrants are the New World Order/controlling powers….

Rise up
Come forth
Raise your fist
Scream with me
Rise up against the tyrants
Come forth, wield your sword
Raise your fist, smash them down
Scream with me, forever more
Align the sky, with swords and shields
Crush them down, into the earth
Grind their bones, within the fields
Smash their system, for all its worth

The band is currently working on its new EP Doom Rides These Mountains.

SINCERA (Norway) Interview by http://heavymetaltribune.blogspot.com

Interview With SINCERA By Hong Rui

Featuring a number of notable veteran musicians in the Norwegian extreme metal scene (such as Fester), Abyss Records this year releases Sincera's first official output in the form of Cursed and Proud, a compilation of sorts, featuring Sincera material new and old. We talk to the band to learn more about their history.

HMT: Greetings Sincera! Thank you for giving us this opportunity to talk to you! Before we start this interview proper, would it be possible to give our readers a brief history of the band?

Sincera was founded back in ‘02, and was meant to be a project for metal musicians in the area surrounding Askim. The first couple of years we didnt even have a name.. When we started playing shows we first took the name “Evening”. A few lineup changes later we ended up as “Sincera”

The band was formed all the way back in 2002, and is only releasing an album this year in the form of “Cursed and Proud”. What was the reason behind this long lag between the formation and the album release?

As mentioned, Sincera has always been meant as a side Project for local musicians. The intention was to do something slightly different than with our main bands. It was never our intention either to play live or record any material. We recorded some tunes back in 2005, but we never released it.. We have just had a blast with this project for our own pleasure. But now, some years later, we thought we should give the public an idea of what we have been goofing around with all these years.. Ha ha

Now that the album is finally released, how does the band feel?

It was about time I guess !! The album turned out great, and we all feel it’s something different than many of the other releases in the scene today

The studio recordings on “Cursed and Proud” are the four demo tracks that were recorded on the “Tall and Proud” demo. What was the reason behind choosing to re-record this demo and put it on this release?

The songs are actually not re-recorded, but just remastered. The studio tracks were recorded in a local studio back in 2005, mixed in some very few hours, and not very producer at all. It wasn't ment to be released, but I think the remastered edition represents the band quite good, at least with the live tracks supporting it. We have several tunes that are not recorded, and we might record them when we have the time to do so.

On “Cursed and Proud” as well, there are four live tracks that were included. Was there any reason behind the inclusion of four live tracks along with four studio tracks on the album?

When you put together a project like this, it is important that everyone participates. We have never felt bounded by doing this or that, and I feel that the difference in the songs proves just that. Sincera live has always been a blast, and we wanted to show the audience that Sincera can be all kind of moods.

The live tracks were taken from a recording that was done on a 9mm hand held video camera, and the rawness on the live tracks are definitely evident. What was it that made the band decide to rip the tracks directly from the recordings instead of further mastering the tracks?

We wanted to capture the rawness, and the brutallity of our music, and the feel of being at a metal show, at a small, dirty venue, and just taking in the pure rawness of it all. We could never have done that by using a 96 track mixer ala Dimmu Borgir etc. For us this is the real thing. Live in the essene. And maybe you can say it is a kick in the ribs to all bands that have overproduced their live tunes..

Let’s now talk about the music that is on “Cursed and Proud”. While the live tracks display the brutal and blasphemous side of Sincera, the band has certainly balanced this out with the emotions that are present on the first four studio tracks. Would it be possible to let readers know which tracks were written earlier in the band’s history?

It’s actually a good mix. The studio tracks are of our earliest stuff, but a couple of the live tunes are from our earliest period as well. “Die like Jeses..” are one of our earliest tunes, and “Where am I !?!” are one of the newest. I guess our present style is a good mix between the two, leaning to the more brutal side.

Was the transition between one style and the other a conscious effort, and how did this transition come about?

Some of the members has been through some though issues with depression, cancer etc, and some of the tunes might have been coloured by these experiences. I guess creativity often blooms when your down.. Some might see the difference in the tunes ( studio compared to the live tunes) as a transition, but we have always felt that darkness can come in all different shapes and sizes, and we belive that the album as a whole is a good example of that. I cant say this has been a conscious effort, rather a natural progression, and making music at different stages in life.

Also, seeing that each of the respective sets have slightly different musical styles, what were the songwriting processes like? Were there much of a difference when it came to writing the music and lyrics of songs like “Die Like Jesus Christ” compared to “A Griever’s Soul”?

Some of the tunes has been made while jamming out a feeling in the rehearsal studio. “Die like Jesus Christ” and “Cursed” are examples of such a song making. Other tunes has been made out of riffs that each members has thrown in to a sort of riff pool, and we have all cooked it up together, or one of us has taken the lead, and suggested some alternatives. Most lyrics has been made out of lyrical themes that the band together has wanted to spin out from. It has been important the lyrical theme fits the mood of the song. “Die” is brutal in both musical and lyrical terms, while “Griever’s soul” is more emotional and solitude.

The song that particular strikes me is the bonus track “Byron Lawless”, the entrance song for the Norwegian wrestler of the same name. How did that come about, and how have fans reacted to the song?

Thomas Andresen ( bass/vocals) has been a wrestling referee for several years, and it was the Byron himself who asked us if we could make an entrance song for him. The lyrics are, of course, about him, his wrestling style, and some of his moves.. It’s obvious that this track couldn't be anything more than a bonus track, but I can assure you that it lifts the roof when the Byron is entering the ring of brutal, and theatrical madness. Some people love it, others don't. I guess one shall just take it for what it is: An entrance song for a wrestler.

With each of the band members in Sincera also involved in numerous other active bands, how do each of you manage to juggle the time between your individual bands and Sincera?

Sincera has always been a Project we take time to deal with when we have the time, and the guts. Some periods we are very aktive, and some more or less totally asleep.. Like now, we have mostly focus on our main bands. Thomas Andresen and I With FESTER, Thomas Aamot with another Project of his called “Psycotic Pain”, and Lars has just got married and put a child to this earth, so like I said, a slow period just now. But then again it’s just a matter of time before we do something again.

Since “Cursed and Proud” features older tracks of the band, would it be possible to let our readers and fans of the band know if we can see and hear any newly written and recorded songs in the near future?

We have several tracks that are not recorded , and we will record them as soon as we have the time, and feel we can put some effort into it. We all agree on the fact that the studio recordings on this release could have been better, and that we will do it differently the next time around. We might do a split With German “Ungod” ( a 12” ), but no dates are scheduled for this. But one thing I can promise you, is that this hasn't been the last you have heard from this Project.

The GARDNERZ (Sweden) The System of Nature DIGI CD review by www.queensofsteel.com

By Tania Giménez

There are always new formations which, although not really contribute something original to the scene, deserve to be heard with attention, since they do not have a high degree of innovation does not mean that quality has not. And that is precisely the case of THE GARDNERZ, a little Swedish, but with some components of Chile and Uruguay, who now draw their debut work, "The System of Nature". A difficult title to define its slow Death Metal means it can be easily seen Funeral Doom.
The sound that reigns throughout this compact is fragile and powerful, brutal and beautiful but with a notable tunes, mostly provided by the guitars that can sometimes recall the work of Schuldiner in DEATH (just listen, for example, cutting open the round, "The Artof Suffering") but, yes, with a much slower pace. The deep grunts of vocalist Niklas Ankarbranth fits perfectly with the dark sound of the combo and at the same time, in contrast to these weak (in sentiment, not quality) melodies that take the lead in the more atmospheric. Other songs like "Lady in the Grave" is pure Death Metal slow and rough and black with a touch metalhead, the truth is that their sound is always a walk in extreme genres, taking the best of each to, following thereby create the very sound of GARDNERZ. That said, the music, although not really original, is very varied, which always adds points to the disc, unfortunately, the voices could also have been more mixed, although its work adapting to what the music calls at all times is more than acceptable. On the other hand, production is a few moments ago that the compact does not sound like you really should, especially in the instrumental passages peculiar curious that includes the band in almost every one of its courts
On other tracks we find more progressive touches that could perfectly remember the best time ATHEIST (relatively speaking, of course).
THE GARDNERZ have interesting ideas (a mixture of styles that we've heard before but it is still welcome) who play through good compositions but, unfortunately, fail a little in the production and vocals that can ultimately lead to monotonous , the truth is that with a little more work the end result could have been really enjoyable. However, and despite being a record that still leaves plenty of room for progress, it is a very interesting debut work and anticipates a great future ahead.

DEAD HORSE (U.S.) BOIL(ing) 12" LP review by www.blistering.com

By Justin Donnelly

Houston crossover act Dead Horse weren’t exactly a huge success while they were active, but in the 15 years since the band parted ways, the group’s legacy has endured throughout the years to the point where the band is now more popular and revered than they ever were when they were active.

Perhaps in part to playing together once again, or simply because enough water had passed under the bridge over the years – either way, Dead Horse have once again been reactivated, with plans to release something new to diehard fans sometime in the not too distant future. In celebration of reformation, Dead Horse have decided to re-release their long out of print and final release Boil(ing) which is also the only release to ever emerge from the line-up of the band that exists today.

In terms of its place within the Dead Horse discography, Boil(ing) still stands as one of the band’s more experimental and more obscure releases, with Price’s approach on the vocal front and the more thought out songwriting style sounding vastly different from the sound many would be familiar with on their first two full-length releases (1989’s Horsecore: An Unrelated Story That’s Time Consuming and 1991’s Peaceful Death And Pretty Flowers).

But despite the change in direction and sound, the album does have its moments, most notably on the thrash-like opener “One Nation,” the slower and more technically-inclined “Reach Around,” the menacing and serious “My Apology” and the short and brutal blast of “My Dog The Prophet.”

Those who only have a passing interest in the Houston act, or want to hear what the fuss is all about are advised to probably seek out the band’s full-length efforts before seeking out Boil(ing). But for diehard Dead Horse fans, this re-release is well and truly overdue, even if it’s only limited to one-thousand copies exclusively on vinyl. Personally, I hope that Dead Horse’s resurrection doesn’t begin and end on this decidedly less than stellar release.

PASADENA NAPALM DIVISION (U.S.) P.N.D. EP CD review by Extremonia Zine

By Carlos Rendo

Well, this is certainly a surprise to me. Step by detailing the issue: Kurt Brecht, frontman DRI, Greg Martin, Scott Sevall and Ronnie Guyot, guitarist and drummer respectively of the Dead Horse and Bubba D. bass and vocals of Verbal Abuse and experience joined forces to shape in 2008 P.N.D., one of the best bands I've heard Crossover Thrash lately and not for least we have a tremendous line of veterans. This Ep contains 5 compositions bearable to invite headbanging and mosh without hesitation and is as effective and straightforward worth checking a heard. Good riffs, good gear, good changes of pace and top titles such as "100 Beers With A Zombie" and "Non Ti Amo" with lyrics in Italian. For fans of DRI, SOD and everything related to the Crossover Thrash Metal.

ENTRENCH (Sweden) Inevitable Decay CD review by Metal Obs Magazine

By Yath

Nobody saw it coming that little disc that looks like nothing. Yet Inevitable Decay, works from the first power-trio Entrench is a carnage. 40 short minutes of ecstasy Thrash Metal front, fast, and very hysterical, but then very well composed. Small rifss vicious, complex structures and compounds that develop intelligent approach a little combo of Thrash Progressive training. Only a little, because the group nevertheless remains focused on its primary energy and groove.

This review was originally written in French and has been translated using Google Translate. The original review in French is listed below...

FAUST (Italy) Interview by http://hatredmeanswar4.blogspot.com

Faust Interview

1.Can you tell us a little bit about the band for those that have never heard you before?

FAUST was born in 1992. During this time, many line-up's changes, several concerts and three releases: "FAUST" demo of 1993, "... And Finally FAUST!" mcd of 2001 and “From Glory To Infinity” full length of 2009. The current line-up is: Aleister - guitar / vocals, Ghiulz - guitar, Steve DiGiorgio - bass. These are the latest news: the new album “From Glory To Infinity” was released by STYGIAN CRYPT productions (Russia) exclusively in EU and by PARAGON RECORDS (USA) exclusively in USA on 9/9/9. It was also released in DIGIPACK format by ABYSS RECORDS (USA) on October the 31st 2009. Soon the PICTURE DISC format will be released by NEGATIVITY RECORDS (USA), limited edition of 666 copies with an exclusive artwork.

2. How would you describe your musical sound?

Melodic, fast and technical Death Metal written by counterpoint technique; I like to call this Evolutionary Death Metal.

3. I know that the band was names after the legendary Faust character, what was it that person that you found interesting?

This moniker was chosen because it was representative of our concept and lyrics.

4. How would you describe the lyrical content of the music?

Funny stories where I mix religion and sex.

5. What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and how would you describe your stage performance?

One of the best show was a festival in January 1994; sometimes I meet people that still remember it. To describe a FAUST’s performance, you must wait for our next tours with the new line-up.

6. Are there any touring plans for the future?

Yes, there are! Finally the first dates have been confirmed; however other more are coming soon.

7. How would you describe your musical progress over the years and what direction do you see the music heading into on future releases?

Basically our sound hasn’t changed since 1992; but, over the years, it has improved: the technical skills, the complexity of the songs’ structure and the refinement of the arrangements. This thanks also to the new arrivals Ghiulz and Steve DiGiorgio. For the next album, we’ll keep working to evolve our Evolutionary Death Metal.

8. How have metal fans worldwide reacted to your music sound so far?

Currently “From Glory To Infinity” is receiving very good reviews from the press and rewarding comments from the listeners around the world.

9. What are some bands or musical styles that have influenced your music and what are you listening to nowadays?

Any band in particular. Our influences reside in what we have heard since we were born: music, songs, sounds, noises. And, of course, in our daily experiences: feelings, emotions, memories, desires. I’m used to listen to different kind of music. Regarding Metal I like most some albums from 1989 to 1993 and some historical albums of the eighties; only few exceptions from 1994 to the present.

10. Does Occultism or Satanism play any role in the music?

No, they don’t!

11. What are some of your interests outside of music?

My job of director for: cinema, video clips, commercials, theatre and television. I've already planned to shoot a video clip for FAUST; as soon as I have the chance, I'll do it.

12. Any final words or thoughts?

Thank you for the interview! Everyone can always contact FAUST or me at: www.deathmetal.it (FAUST's official website), www.myspace.com/faustband2 (FAUST's page), www.myspace.com/aleisterpgd (my personal page). Hail to all readers! Hope to see
